Contest types
GPP (guaranteed prize pool)
Large-field tournaments with top-heavy payouts. A small percentage of entries win the bulk of the prize pool, so they reward differentiated, high-ceiling lineups.
Cash games
Double-ups and 50/50s where roughly the top half of entries each win about double their entry. Consistency beats ceiling; you only need to clear the field’s midpoint.
Head-to-head
One lineup against one opponent, winner take all. Useful for managing variance and targeting specific players you think are mispriced.
Showdown (single game)
Build a six-player roster from one game with a captain who earns 1.5x points. The whole field watches the same game, so correlation and game scripts dominate.
Satellites & qualifiers
Cheap entries that pay out seats into bigger live or online finals rather than cash.
How scoring & rosters work
- Each contest gives you a $50,000 salary cap to fill a roster of position slots — for NFL classic that is QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, FLEX, and a DST.
- Player salaries reflect projected output, so the skill is squeezing the most projected points out of a fixed budget while staying differentiated from the field.
- Scoring is full-PPR for most sports (a point per reception in football), with bonuses for milestones like a 100-yard game or a 300-yard passing day.
Mobile app: The DraftKings app (iOS and Android) handles lineup building, live scoring, and late swaps cleanly, and shares a login with DraftKings Sportsbook and casino where those are legal.
Deposit bonus up to $100
New DFS players receive a deposit match released gradually as they play rated contests, plus a free entry into a beginner-friendly contest. The bonus unlocks in increments rather than all at once.
18+ (19+/21+ in some states). New DFS users only. Bonus releases as you play; play-through applies.
Getting started
- Confirm DraftKings DFS offers paid contests in your state and you meet the minimum age.
- Create an account and make a qualifying deposit to trigger the welcome bonus.
- Start in a low-stakes cash game (50/50 or double-up) to learn roster construction before entering GPPs.
- Build a lineup under the $50,000 cap, submit before lock, and follow live scoring in the app.
Legality
Paid DFS is offered in most states. A handful — including states that treat DFS as gambling or have not passed enabling laws — restrict or block paid contests; DraftKings runs free contests in some of those.
Check legality by state →DraftKings DFS FAQ
- What is the salary cap on DraftKings?
- Classic DraftKings contests give every entrant a $50,000 cap to fill the roster. Each player has a salary set by projected output, so you are optimising points per dollar against a fixed budget.
- What is the difference between a GPP and a cash game?
- A GPP is a top-heavy tournament where a few lineups win most of the prize pool, rewarding high-ceiling, differentiated rosters. A cash game (50/50 or double-up) pays roughly the top half about double their entry, so consistency matters more than ceiling.
- Is DraftKings DFS the same as DraftKings Sportsbook?
- No. DFS contests are games of skill against other players; the sportsbook is wagering against the house. They are separate products with separate legality, though they share a login and wallet where both are legal.
- How does DraftKings scoring work?
- Most sports use full-PPR scoring with milestone bonuses (for example a 100-yard rushing or receiving game in NFL). Points accrue live as games play out, and you can make late swaps before each player’s game locks.
